Video explaining EDM and electrically induced bearing damage



Electrical discharge machining, otherwise known as EDM, has been a manufacturing technique for decades. It just so happens that EDM is the basis for electrically induced motor bearing damage that is caused when a build-up of shaft voltage overcomes the dielectric (bearing grease) and a small amount of current strikes the bearing and flakes away a piece of bearing material. This process is repeated millions of times in an unprotected motor and will lead to catastrophic bearing failure. The only effective way to eliminate this costly problem for the long-term is to install an SGSTM shaft grounding system that provides a low impedance pathway around the bearing and back to the motor frame.
